2ND-5TH GRADE COMMUNITY PROGRAM

when kids train to put on a show, they are learning life skills:
Empathy, Teamwork, Patience, Listening, Focus, Hard Work, Awareness, Confidence, Discipline, Personal Responsibility, Body Control, Problem Solving... the list goes on!
Who: Our Community Program is open to ALL 2nd - 5th graders in the Portland area.
What: A 60-minute production of the beloved classic James and the Giant Peach explored, rehearsed, and then performed. Kids will learn what it takes to put on a professional show through fun theater and vocal games, as well as being cast in the show. No formal auditions are held ahead of the start date. Any kid who joins the club, joins the cast!
PARENTS please note: Our production classes are a huge commitment! Please be aware the purpose of this class is putting on a show for which we can be proud. All kids 2nd - 5th grade will be asked to work hard to memorize lines, songs, and dances for the performance (sometimes outside of class as homework). We believe theater is a discipline to be respected and learned. This is not simply an after school child care class. Please talk with your children about this commitment.
When: Tuesdays, 3:30pm-5:30pm; August 28, 2018 - June 4, 2019
- NO CLASS: November 20, December 18 and 25, January 1 and 22, March 26
- Tentative Performance Dates: Friday May 10 and Saturday May 11, 2019 (Mother's Day weekend- not confirmed!)
**Your child MUST be available for the first two weekends as we have not finalized our schedule.
Where: St. David of Wales Parish Hall, 2800 SE Harrison Street, Portland 97214
Cost: $650 for the full-year program (payment plan available)
+$45 for Abernethy Elementary walking group (see info below)
- We are not able to offer full scholarships for our programs. A limited number of partial scholarships are available on a first-come-first-served basis. Please contact us for details.
- A 15% sibling discount is available (full price for first child and 15% off additional children)
- We can accept students up to October 16 at a prorated price (minus $16 per missed class). Any kids entering class after our Tuesday, September 25 class will only be considered for chorus roles.
- Refunds up to October 9 will be prorated at $16/class minus a $50 admin fee.
- No refunds after October 9.
Abernethy Walking Group: The walking group from Abernethy Elementary will ONLY be possible in 2018/2019 with the help of volunteer parents. If we don't have two parent volunteers per walk signed up by the start date, the walking group will be canceled. Please help! If you volunteer for at least 3 walking days in the school year, you get the walk fee waived. You can also get $10 off class for each additional walk. If you want to be a permanent parent walker, you can save $325 off the total cost of the class (that's half off!). We anticipate having a large group of walkers, so we need at least 2 parents per walk. If you can't volunteer at all, the fee is $45 for your child to participate in the walk for the entire year, but PLEASE REMEMBER if we do not have enough volunteer parents we can't have this walking group. The $45 fee covers my one staff member + the additional half hour of care before class starts. While our staff member and volunteer parents will always make your child's safety their #1 priority during the walk, Portland Drama Club and volunteer parents will not be held responsible should an accident happen. If your child can not handle him or herself in a responsible and safe manner, your child will be removed from the walking group. Please dress your child appropriately on days when rain is in the forecast (a change of shoes is helpful) and pack a snack! Thank you! We can't wait for next year.
